Higher export value of timber and timber products can only be driven by value added and finished products which include furniture. Therefore, Malaysian furniture industry companies are encouraged to venture more into ODM (“Original Design Manufacturing”), as opposed to OEM (“Original Equipment Manufacturing).
The Professional Designers Program (PDP) is a long term program to develop and improve the international reach and scope for the Malaysian furniture products and companies. Thanks to the Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council (MFPC), a Government Agency under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC), the Malaysian furniture manufacturers will receive support to develop new products, with the help of well-known and highly-regarded international designers, as well as promising Tanggam designers and in-house designers.
The PDP Program Development
The Malaysia furniture industry has climbed to the first 10 export countries in the world ranking for the furniture market. This is a big success, achieved step by step in the last 20 years, thanks to the huge offer of different kinds of timber and to the capability of the Malaysian furniture production, developed today into a mature industry from the humble cottage industry of the ’80s.
In June 2015, Malaysia’s current average furniture export value is RM 8 billion annually, and it is expected to increase to RM 16 billion by the year 2020.
The first pilot PDP program started on June, 29, 2015.
During the fall/winter 2015/2016 the Designers, the Companies, MFPC and MTIB teamed up together, to transform the concepts into prototypes.
At EFE 2016, the results has been officially presented to the world.
All of the prototypes, including the 8 prototypes designed by the 8 TANGGAM designers and the 4 concepts designed by the in-house designers, are conceived to enhance the products value, to show to the international public visiting EFE 2016 the potential of the Malaysian furniture industry, the beauty of the Malaysian woods and the workmanship of the Malaysian workers.
